"Survivor: A portrait of the survivors of the Holocaust" - Harry Borden's new book
23 January 2017
Hempstead May was recently honoured to provide print and colour consultation to Harry Borden in respect of his powerful new book 'Survivors'.
For Harry Borden, "Survivors" is not only a new project/book to promulgate personal stories of the Holocaust, it is also "a personal exploration of my identity" he writes. Over the course of five years award-winning photographer Harry Borden, known for his portraits of celebrities, has travelled around the world photographing survivors of the Holocaust.
"The genesis of this project arose from my childhood. My brother, sister and I grew up in a vaguely non-religious environment. Like most boys, I idealized my father and when he explained bluntly that the Nazis would have killed us because of our racial and religious characteristics, I was shocked."
Harry asked each sitter to provide a hand written statement of their choosing, anything from poems, to memories, even hopes for the future. He did this to help illustrate each person's unique perspective and create a level of intimacy between the sitter and reader.
In 2014 the body of work was shortlisted for the European Publishers Award.
Survivor a 288-page monograph is available for pre-order now at Amazon.
Thank you, Harry.
